SAMHSA’s National Helpline is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders. The Helpline is accessible through multiple communication channels to reduce barriers to care. Individuals and families can contact the service by phone or by text message (SMS), making it easier for people to seek help in ways that feel safe and convenient for them. This flexibility allows those who may feel uncomfortable calling or who are in situations where texting is more practical to still receive immediate assistance. All interactions remain confidential, helping to create a trusted environment where people can speak openly about their concerns without fear of stigma.
Beyond providing referrals, SAMHSA’s National Helpline plays an important role in education and prevention. Specialists help callers recognize warning signs, understand mental and substance use disorders, and identify supportive resources within their communities. Family members and caregivers also benefit from learning how to support loved ones while caring for their own well-being. By empowering individuals with information and access to services, the Helpline helps strengthen long-term recovery and resilience.
